Saltire Roofing & Building Ltd, based in Edinburgh, is a multi-trade company that makes a difference. They pride themselves on being first for customer care and guarantee delivery of a high quality, superior service to both domestic and commercial clients, including public sector contracts across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, Falkirk & the Scottish Borders.

Over the last five years, Saltire has reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill (from 9% to less than 1.5%). Their goal is to become a completely circular operation and drive that figure down to zero. Saltire has recently signed up to Zero Waste Scotland’s Construction Material Exchange (CME) where they upload reusable materials for community groups to benefit from.

When it comes to sourcing and purchasing goods, Saltire prioritise repair, re-use and second-hand goods, as specified in their Environmental and Sustainability policy. Where new items are required, the company will only use regional suppliers who have a sustainable timber purchasing policy.

All company vehicles are fitted with trackers, to maximise efficiency and minimise carbon emissions, delivering a 30% reduction in miles and 30% improvement in fuel consumption. Saltire currently has one electric vehicle (EV) within its fleet and three electric pedal cycles, with further EV investment planned in for the future.

The company has engaged with a range of business support organisations, including Zero Waste Scotland, Energy Saving Trust/Home Energy Scotland and the RSPB. This has enabled them to make a Resource Efficiency Pledge, train two certified ‘Green Champions’, explore options for EV investment and pledge to commit to become a ‘Swift Friendly’ roofing company.

Community is at the heart of the business and Saltire supports a number of charities and local projects. Working with the City of Edinburgh Council, the company has proposed to donate time and services, including to help fund a community tree planting scheme involving local residents, as part of the Edinburgh Million Tree City project.
