Scotmas, based in Kelso, is a global leader in developing Chlorine Dioxide-based (ClO2) water treatment technology. The company's products reduce the environmental and economic impacts of traditional water disinfection methods. Scotmas is a future facing business with ambitions, backed up by sustainable plans to help areas of the world suffering from water stress and expensive water treatment programmes. Scotmas works across multiple sectors ranging from healthcare and agriculture to industrial sites and residential properties.
The business has safe, sustainable water systems at its core. The next stages of the business plan are to link water stress solutions to carbon savings and ensuring what they consider the environment at all stages. Scotmas are leading on innovation to establish small desalination plants in developing countries save tonnes of carbon and focusing on smaller projects in Africa specifically where water desalination is due to be particularly challenging.
Scotmas acknowledges that people and animals can be kept safe from pathogens without the use of chemical and practices that damage the environment. The primary disinfection technology developed and used by in their treatment plants is chlorine dioxide, which has been proven to be the most environmentally neutral biocide in use, minimising environmental and corrosivity impact, and unlike other biocides, it does not react to form toxic by-products.
Scotmas’s latest chlorine dioxide generator, has achieved considerable success in desalination plants where it minimises environmental impact at seawater intakes, reduces capital work and ongoing power needs and reduces or eliminates membrane replacement. By-products from the process exceed the World Health Organisation standards and removes much of the need for secondary disinfection, reducing costs and increasing suitability.
The business not only delivers environmental sense in on site, but the practices start at the factory. All inputs are assessed for environmental impact. Packaging is recycled or recyclable, power needs are minimised thanks to our 85 KWP solar panel installation and our tabletted disinfection products replace the need for liquid disinfectants. Scotmas has committed to being NetZero by 2025 and have already reduced overall emissions in our own processes by almost 50%. Having carefully examined business practices over the past 2 years.
Within the business, future goals are focussed around “green measures” with clear sustainability targets set out in the companies' environmental policy as well as goals of staff engagement with inclusion in target setting and delivery.
“We are delighted to win such a prestigious environmental award.
