Highlights

  • 50000 bikes saved from landfill and sold over 1300 re-loved and repurposed bikes in the last 12 months alone.
  • Next bike maintenance contract between Feb 2015 and Dec 2021 supported 160,000 journeys and 200,000 miles.
  • Forth bike maintenance contract has supported 49,904 journeys and 209,277 miles over 3 years.
  • Cycling UK repair scheme – over 200 bikes repaired free of charge to customers.
  • Coordinating and delivering Bikeability lessons for children in Stirling, Clackmannanshire and trained over 2000 children during the last academic year.

Recyke-a-bike, based in Stirling, are a cycling and training charity focused on repairing bikes and selling them. Through promoting cycling, they aim to relieve poverty within their community, also supporting improvements in health, education and the environment. Recyke-a-bike undertake a wide range of community programmes such as Bike Buddies, Doctor Bike, Cycling UK repair scheme.

Recyke-a-bike is an organisation focused on helping people, going beyond simply repairing old bikes and selling them. They also support a wide range of community programmes, social benefits are a key theme for Recyke-a-bike.

The judges were impressed by Recycke-a-bike's ‘use all parts’ approach. Every part of every bike that comes in is reused or recycled no matter the difficulty or cost e.g. bike tyres are incredibly difficult to recycle due their composition but they found one of only a few organisations who have the capability to do this.

The Moving Scotland Award recognises businesses whose environmental impact have reduced significantly as a result of the introduction of active travel and sustainable transport initiatives.

Recyke-a-bike engage with a wide range of partners across the Forth Valley area with activities ranging from supporting community interest programmes, providing bike repair pop ups and handling the maintenance contract for Forth Bike and Next Bike. They provide social benefits for the community, through employment programmes or active elder programmes.

The concept of shifting people towards cycling for commuting and hobby in a safe and secure way informs the wide variety of projects they are involved in. The judges felt their SUD Lorry driver training was a great initiative which had potential to be replicated.
