VIBES Award: Process

Highlights

Sureclean demonstrate how increasing flexibility and a move away from chemical treatment methods can reduce environmental risks whilst providing savings to customers. This has created opportunities to engage staff to support their environmental targets, increase the promotion of their services, and create new opportunities to network with other organisations.

Sureclean have extensive experience in waste management, treatment and disposal. They currently operate two licensed waste treatment and transfer facilities located in Alness and Aberdeen. Through research and development of a modular treatment system, the company aims to provide clients with a total treatment package. Through this, oil emulsion and heavy metal reductions have reduced the environmental impact of the treatment process. It has also demonstrated savings of up to £450,000 for customers.

Sureclean has undertaken an innovative approach to their waste management and treatment strategy. As a result, they have recorded greater economic benefits and increased competitiveness. By combining and enhancing treatment technologies, including UV/catalyst treatment, electro chemistry and specialist filtration media, Sureclean are able to meet highly specific customer requirements and move away from chemical treatment methods. With a flexible and portable modular unit, they are able to process waste on site. This has created significant savings for customers through reduction in running costs, particularly with regards to the transfer of waste. For one client, this is expected to reduce trade effluent charges from £600,000 to £150,000 per year.

Sureclean technologies report a reduction in oil emulsion of up to 99%, and significant reductions in Heavy Metals, BOD and COD. There are also wider applications of the modular system, particularly in the oil sector, where oil waste materials can be treated in remote locations reducing the overall carbon footprint and allowing the client to re-use the water at source.

The company demonstrates a strong commitment to their environmental policies. They are accredited to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 and have a green champion at each site. Employee engagement is achieved through Sureclean Observation Cards (SOC), which are widely used as an upward suggestion conduit for employees, with around 100 generated per month.

Sureclean cultivate wider growth opportunities as members of the Scottish Environmental Technology Network (SETN). ‘Lunch and learn’ sessions are held with clients to promote their services. As an ambassador for the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme, they have undertaken projects with students providing employment opportunities. Community benefits are also recognised from the partnership with organisations such as Waste Recyclability and New Start Highland.
