The family-run Castle Douglas-based business picked up its accolade having impressed judges with its environmentally friendly manufacturing, organic farming and unique ice cream.
It was also recognised for its extensive contribution to the local economy and community made through its four-star visitor centre – which accounts for 40 per cent of its annual turnover. More››
Case Study - Oct 2007 - Caledonian Cheese
Stranraer-based Caledonian Cheese Company Ltd is setting new standards for outstanding commitment to energy saving and environmentally friendly initiatives.
The 2006 winner of the VIBES ‘best large company’ award in the south of Scotland is already well known as a manufacturer of cheddar cheeses including supermarket favorite: Seriously Strong, which recently fought off competition from 866 of the UK’s best cheeses to be named Supreme Champion 2007 at the British Cheese Awards.
Caledonian Cheese Company Ltd also produce whey powder and sweet cream butter and it is now establishing a strong track record for maintaining the environment.
Last year’s VIBES judges were impressed by their extensive local programme which shows immense innovation and commitment to minimising energy consumption as well as reducing their outgoing expenditure.

Case Study - Aug 2007 - Gillespie Leisure
The 2006 VIBES awards saw Gillespie Leisure Ltd, owners of a five star holiday park in south west Scotland, scoop a regional award in the medium sized company category (50-250 employees) for their immense commitment to energy saving.

Case Study - June 2007 - Taypack Potatoes
Perthshire-based potato distributor Taypack Potatoes Ltd was crowned winner in the medium company category (50-250 employees) at the VIBES 2006 awards, an accolade it is proud to have received for the second year in a row.
The firm is owned by George Taylor and has an annual throughput of 135,000 tonnes.
Taypack supplies potatoes to supermarkets and wholesale customers all over Europe and Scandinavia.
The company is committed to its environmental policy and has implemented a biodiversity action plan to achieve its environmental goals. Initiatives range from the introduction of owl boxes, bird boxes and bat boxes on site, to developing new polythene and cardboard recycling schemes which have reduced the cost of mixed waste removal and landfill charges.
