20:20 Climate Group Members Sponsor VIBES Award Categories

August 17th, 2010

Not only have the VIBES team been busy selecting shortlisted entrants for this year’s awards; we’ve also received the support of two businesses that are members of the Government’s 20:20 Climate Group – Stagecoach Group and William Tracey Group

Stagecoach Group, who won the Process Award in 2009, is sponsor of the VIBES Best Micro Company Award for this year.  I spoke with Steven Stewart, Director of Corporate Communications, who told me why Stagecoach Group is sponsoring this award:

“Helping people lead greener lifestyles and being a more sustainable community partner is central to our business. Having previously won a VIBES award ourselves, we firmly believe in the importance of developing environmental best practice and we also know many innovations in our economy come from the micro company sector. We are delighted to sponsor the Best Micro Company Award and would encourage companies who are focused on increasing sustainability to enter.”

The William Tracey Group is sponsoring the VIBES Service Award 2010. The recycling and waste management company has won this category for the past two years; in 2008 and 2009.

Michael Tracey, Managing Director of the William Tracey Group told me that: “Winning a VIBES award for two consecutive years has been very rewarding for the William Tracey Group both in terms of the promotional aspects of the environmental recognition gained and staff morale. We highly recommend that businesses that are committed to the environment enter VIBES – the rewards are vast.”

VIBES is delighted to have such high profile sponsors on board who are eager to spread the word about what winning a VIBES Award can do for your business!

VIBES 2010 – Did you get your entry in on time?

July 16th, 2010

It’s been a busy few weeks for the VIBES team in the run up to the closing date for this year’s awards.  It’s great to receive entries from all types and sizes of business across Scotland and we’re looking forward to working our way through the entries and deciding on shortlisted businesses in the next few weeks.

So, you’ve submitted your entry and we’ve acknowledged it, but you must be wondering what happens now?

Our judging panel will soon meet to go through each application, applying a scoring system to each criteria, to decide which entrants are strong enough to progress to the shortlisting stage.

We’ll be in touch with all applicants at the end of July to let you know if you’ve been succesful.  For those of you lucky enough to be shortlisted, we’ll arrange for our judges to visit your site in the autumn.

Even if you don’t make it to the shortlist stage, you’ll still receive useful feedback from us on how you can improve on the actions you’re already taking.  This could be in the form of referring you to free Government funded support from organisations such as Zero Waste Scotland.

Through feedback and support to further improve you could apply to VIBES again in the future.  You may even go on to be a future VIBES winner!

The site visits are a great opportunity for you to give more detail on the information provided in your application.  The judges will spend around 2-3 hours at your site, asking you specific questions to allow them to score your business against each of the criteria that you answered in your application.  This is your chance to really highlight your actions and achievements to the judges – be sure to shine!

The site visits will be complete by mid October and the feedback and scores from the visits will be collated for the second shortlist panel meeting later that month.  We’ll then determine the second shortlist for the awards.

It’s following this stage that the final panel members of David Sigsworth, SEPA Chairman, Iain McMillan, CBI Scotland Director and Jan Bebbington, Vice-Chair of the Sustainable Development Commision in Scotland, meet to determine the final winners.  Their decision is kept under wraps until the announcement of the winners at the awards ceremony at the Radisson Hotel Glasgow on 1st December.

It might seem like a long time between the closing date for entries and announcement of the winners but hopefully you can now understand why!  It’s this rigorous judging process that makes us one of a handful of RSA accredited award schemes in the UK, and the only one in Scotland.

Good luck to all of this year’s entrants and we’ll be touch with you all soon!

NEW CATEGORY FOR 2010: VIBES Special Award for Energy Efficiency

June 25th, 2010

The VIBES Team has announced that all 2010 award entries will be considered for the VIBES Special Award for Energy Efficiency this year – good news for those of you who are currently filling out your application forms and another reason to apply for those who haven’t already!

The VIBES Special Award for Energy Efficiency, which is supported by the Scottish Government’s Action on Energy Efficiency, aims to reward businesses that have made the biggest steps in cutting their energy use and Co2 emissions.

Any organisation applying for a VIBES award this year will automatically be considered for the award and you will not need to fill out a separate application form for this category. So, remember to bear this new award category in mind when you’re completing your application to increase your organisation’s chances of being selected.

When completing your form, make sure you look through your standard award guidance notes, which you can download from our website, and where you can also find a full breakdown of what your award entry should include.

To help increase your chances in the VIBES Special Award for Energy Efficiency we have listed the essential criteria for this award below:

For management category entrants:

  • You must be able to demonstrate a true energy and CO2 saving figure that is related to your business turnover.
  • Consideration will be given to energy productivity. This ensures that expanding businesses are not disadvantaged by their increased activity and subsequent consumption. In the same way other businesses are not put at an unfair advantage because they have reduced energy consumption through contraction or recession.

 For product/process/service category entrants:

  • You must be able to demonstrate how you have made innovative use of:
    • design;
    • material;
    • methods;
    • technologies;
    • approaches; or
    • intervention packages
  •  You must provide quantitative evidence of how this had led to significantly reduced energy consumption and CO2 emissions, for example through fuel bills or research testing results.
     Remember the application deadline this year for all our award categories is Friday, 9 July. The winners will then be announced at the VIBES awards ceremony in Glasgow in December 2010.

 It seems the VIBES 2010 awards is getting even more interesting, we can’t wait to hear what businesses are doing this year!

 Best of luck,

The VIBES Team

New to VIBES? Remember it’s not too late to get your entries in!

May 4th, 2010

With fewer than six weeks to go before entries close for Scotland’s most “environmentally-friendly” business competition, we’re keen to remind businesses of all sizes that they still have plenty of time to get their entries into the VIBES 2010 awards.

For more than a decade, VIBES has recognised businesses from across Scotland whose sustainable practices contribute to the overall well-being of this great country.

Previous winners and shortlisted companies come from a vast variety of sectors, including manufacturing; food and drink; transport; environmental services; oil and gas and leisure – to name but a few.

As the deadline approaches for this year’s awards we are keen to see how doing business in Scotland has changed this year.

This year will be an interesting one to judge, not only because of the extreme winter that businesses had to adapt to but in addition we have seen a rise in new businesses develop in a very different financial environment. We would be interested to hear about the methods that newer businesses employ to incorporate sustainability into their daily practices.

I advise anyone entering the competition for the first time to check out our numerous success stories from the past two years on our website by clicking here.

Or if you want to speak to someone from VIBES, feel free to give us a call to see if you’ll be eligible for an award entry on 01349 860398.

If you get shortlisted, you will receive constructive feedback from some of Scotland’s key environmental experts.

Remember the awards are free, so you have nothing to lose!

Look forward to hearing from you,
Alan Farquhar, VIBES chair

VIBES 2010 – Now open for business!

March 2nd, 2010

Hello all and welcome to our first VIBES blog, the place where you can find all the latest news and chit-chat from the VIBES team about the awards.

Earlier this month we kicked-off our search for Scotland’s top environmentally-friendly businesses at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.

 Rob Gibson MSP hosted the event, and presentations were given by Con Kerwin, the Environment Director of William Tracey Group, Calum MacDonald of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and David Douglas of Robert Wiseman & Sons Ltd, a previous VIBES Award winner.

The launch event was hosted by MSP Rob Gibson, and some encouraging words for this year’s applicants were given by Con Kerwin, environment director of the William Tracey Group, which won the Service Award in 2009; Calum MacDonald, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and David Douglas of Wiseman Dairies, also a previous winner.

Our free-to-enter awards has now been running for some 11 years and acknowledge businesses of all sizes and sectors that employ environmental best practice in their day-to-day activity and also reap the benefits of savings made to their bottom line as a result.

In addition, VIBES is currently the only Scottish award scheme to feed directly into the European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE). This year two Scottish businesses out of 11 from the UK have been put forward for EBEA. Nu-phalt Group Ltd based in Rosyth and Total E&P UK Ltd based at St Fergus Terminal in Aberdeenshire, will be representing Scotland and vying for the prestigious awards, which will be announced in June in Brussels.

Some positive news for Scotland, and even more of a reason to enter VIBES to keep the momentum going!

Make sure you check the VIBES blog regularly for the latest ‘VIBE-rations’ from this year’s awards… and for some helpful tips and advice on how to get the most out of your VIBES application.

You can obtain an application form for VIBES 2010 by visiting the awards website by clicking here.

Good luck!
